Lane Copper was born in New Brunswick, NJ, on Dec.14, 1875; attended Rutgers College 1892-1896. After graduation, he briefly attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, then transferred to Yale University, where he received his Master's degree in English in 1898. He returned to Rutgers College, completing another Master's degree in 1899, followed by a Ph.D. in English philology in 1902 from Leipzig University in Germany.
